News From Burnet!
Hello, this is Jill again. I got to visit Whitney at Camp Longhorn on Monday! The camp really is a neat place — they have water slides and a petting zoo with baby GOTES and deer, and tiny baby skunks, and cute boy counselors. I can see why she likes it! (But i would go crazy with so few off nights. Some people need more “me-time” than others…)
A few of us went into Austin for the day since they had 12 hours off (the “90210″ in code — do the math), and ended up spending most of the day at a mall. We did some serious shopping, especially Whit! She got a little laundry bag thing at Foley’s that has a froggie head, and you put your laundry in his mouth. So cupe! Kristen and i couldn’t do as much shopping, but we both gave in to the $9.99 pique tube tops at American Eagle. Also very cupe!
At dinner we were all a little bit spaced out, and i got to hear the lovely story of summer 1988 at Camp Longhorn, when 90% of campers and staff had a stomach bug. They had to cancel the dance and have movie night instead, and then had to stop the movie halfway through because people were barfing everywhere, and then they had to hose down the concrete! Ewwwwwwwwww!!! Great story.
On our way back through Burnet, we saw a smashed up truck facing the wrong way on the road, and smoke and debris all over. We stopped to check on him, along with a guy we had seen driving (who had a CLH hitch cover on his truck), and then drove back into town to flag down a cop. It turned out the driver was stumbling drunk, but okay, along with his passenger. I don’t see how they weren’t hurt, unless the alcohol just relaxed them so much that they didn’t tense up at impact. Their truck looked like it had rolled over because it was so badly dented!
It turns out the other guy who stopped was the son of one of the camp directors, and lives out there when he’s not at college. We saw him there when we got back, and all talked for a while (i got to meet Handy!). He was really nice and offered to let me stay at their house so i wouldn’t have to drive back to Dallas since it was almost midnight. I thought that was so sweet! Whitney said that’s just how people at camp are.
Remember, if you miss Whitney, you can send her messages through the Camp Longhorn website that she posted about before she left.

Hurricane CLH ‘04
Hello friends, this is Jill – Whitney made a special password just for me, so i can post updates about her adventures at camp! Hope that’s okay with everyone… ahahahahahaha!
So apparently that storm we had on the South Plains last night converged with the one from the Metroplex or something, because Whitney claims to have survived a hurricane. She was awakened about 1:30am from a deep sleep because something hit her in the face. These “cabins” they have down at Camp Longhorn are just glorified platforms with not much on the sides, from what i understand, and i guess the storm blew in from the north, directly to Whit’s bunk. (Hap is bunk ‘04.) I’m still not clear on exactly what hit her in the face because she was telling the story very fast, with Sonora chattering in the background.
She jumped out of bed to try to fasten the shutters closed, and would have fallen into the lake (there’s no railing!) if Kristen hadn’t caught her arm! So if you see Kristen, thank her for being a hero. They called Bill, the camp director, to get a weather report, and he said the reddest part of the radar was directly over camp. Good times!
Tonight they went to Wal-Mart, and then Whitney got ice cream. The last i heard from her, she was singing “2 Legit 2 Quit,” and telling twins, “Your problem is that there are two of you.” Yes, folks, camp is exciting.
